these six recording were rendered from my first day win in-ear binaural microphones. the mics were worn throughout the day, which was later cut into these six moments. no processing was done to the sound, however in cases there are edits.

recorded entering a movie theatre, purchasing a ticket through an atm, riding the escalator to the concession and then into the movie. i turned the mics off during the show, but turned them back on once it was finished and recorded my exit.

field_02
walking through the streets of manhattan from the west side, to my home in nolita where i picked up my dog, then across housten and over to the east village. i came back home via bowery. this file has a number of edits as i seemed to recall the walk out of order in retrospect.

field_03
while waiting for a movie to start, i spent some time browsing for books. this recording cuts the experience of two stores - strand, a used book store on 12th, and barnes and noble on astor - into a mesh of conflicting atmospheres. one much quieter than the other.

field_04
later in the evening, in brooklyn beneath the manhatten bridge, some friends were preparing a performance as part of the dumbo festival. i captured some of the trains going over the bridge and also a bit of walking around the festival.

field_05
on the way to the dumbo festival, i rode the f train from broadway-lafayette. i've editted out some of the ride, and included part of the long walk underground at the york street station. there was a slight wind all night, which might have been picked up by the mics.

field_06
in the afternoon i stopped at the met grocer to purchase food for dinner. no one seemed to mind the in-ear mics, as they look identical to ear-buds. there is such a barrage of sound at checkout that i hadn't noticed before i listened to this recording.

April 6, 2005, Dean Robbins inaugurates UPSTATE: an institute for city and regional design, a new branch of the Syracuse University School of Architecture, with the conference UPSTATE: downtown - Syracuse and the Shrinking City. A distinguished group of architects, landscape architects, and planners from across the nation examine the ways design can help revitalize Syracuse and other cities that have experienced disinvestment and population decline.

Nick Alexander performs the Nullsound Installation city | suburb | transit, a 12 channel soundscape, as the main event of the conference reception.

The recording upstate.mp3 is a stereo mix of a 70 minute slice of the installation. The remaining tracks are various mixes of the source material used in constructing the soundscape.
